About

Robert Anthony Noonan, known professionally as Willie Nile, was born on June 7, 1948, in Buffalo, New York. Growing up in an Irish Catholic family with a strong musical background, Nile was exposed to various genres from an early age, fostering his passion for music. His grandfather, a vaudeville pianist, also contributed to this early musical upbringing. Nile pursued philosophy studies at the University at Buffalo before relocating to Greenwich Village, where he commenced his music career. During his early period, he frequented influential clubs such as CBGB, observing performances by notable artists like Patti Smith, Television, the Ramones, and Talking Heads.

Nile gained early recognition after New York Times music critic Robert Palmer described him as “the most gifted songwriter to emerge from the New York folk scene.” This led to a record deal with Arista Records, and his self-titled debut album, “Willie Nile,” was released in 1980. Following this, he joined The Who’s 1980 summer tour, further establishing his presence. His second album, “Golden Down,” was released in 1981. However, legal issues subsequently caused a pause in his active recording and performing career for several years. He resumed performing in 1987 in Oslo, Norway, with Eric Andersen, signaling his re-emergence in the music scene. A Columbia Records talent scout signed him in 1988, leading to the 1991 release of “Places I Have Never Been.” This album featured collaborations with musicians such as Richard Thompson, Loudon Wainwright III, Roger McGuinn, and members of The Hooters and The Roches. He also made an appearance as a guest musician on “Late Night with David Letterman” on June 11, 1991.

Throughout his career, Nile has collaborated with numerous artists, including Ringo Starr, Tori Amos, Elvis Costello, Lucinda Williams, and Ian Hunter. His 1999 self-released album, “Beautiful Wreck of the World,” was recognized as one of the Top Ten Albums of the Year by critics at Billboard magazine, The Village Voice, and Stereo Review. In 2003, he shared the stage with the E Street Band for three concerts, including two shows at Giants Stadium and two at Shea Stadium. In 2005, Nile was inducted into the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame. His album “Streets of New York” (2006) received positive reviews, with former Time magazine music critic Jay Cocks praising its authenticity. On November 22, 2009, Nile joined the E Street Band to perform Jackie Wilson’s “Higher and Higher.” He was named a Legacy Ambassador for the Buddy Holly Educational Foundation in 2013 and released his album “American Ride” through Loud & Proud Records. In 2015, Bruce Springsteen joined him on stage at the Light of Day Benefit to perform “One Guitar.” Nile’s 2018 album “Children of Paradise” was also critically acclaimed, with Kiley Armstrong of Associated Press calling it “his best album to date.” His 2020 album, “New York at Night,” was noted by American Songwriter magazine as placing him in the lineage of significant New York songwriters.
