A world-renowned businessman, economist and academic, Lord Adair Turner is an eminent figure in British financial services. As former Chairman of Britain’s Financial Services Authority (FSA), the acclaimed economist was integral to the redesign of global banking and shadow banking regulation following the 2008 crisis, leading the initiative through many difficult challenges and negotiations. As former Director at McKinsey & Co, he concentrated his efforts on developing their practice in Eastern Europe and Russia. Turner later assumed the role of Director at the Confederation of British Industry (1995 – 1999) and became Vice Chairman of Merrill Lynch Europe (2000 – 2006). He is currently a Senior Fellow at the Institute for New Economic Thinking (INET), prior to which he was Chairman of the Government board after joining the organisation in 2013.
Turner has held several key senior positions throughout his illustrious career; including Chairman of the Pensions Commission, Chairman of the Low Pay Commission, First Chairman of the Climate Change Committee, non-Executive Director at Prudence PLC and more recently, non-Executive Chairman at CHUBB. Adair’s prolific achievements were formally recognised after he received the title of Baron Turner of Ecchinswell, becoming a cross-bench member of the House of Lords in 2005. Adding to his accomplishments, he was elected as Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society in 2016 and is a Trustee of the British Museum.
Owing to his exceptional academic background, Turner is a visiting Professor at the London School of Economics and visiting Fellow at numerous international educational institutes. Turner is also a celebrated Author, having written several esteemed publications, including Between Debt and the Devil: Money, Credit and Fixing Global Finance, published through Princeton University Press in 2015 and since translated into multiple languages.
