Anne Hardy

Anne Hardy, born in 1970 in the United Kingdom, is a British artist whose practice encompasses photography, sculptural installation, and audio art. Her foundational education includes a degree in painting from Cheltenham School of Art in 1993, followed by an MA in photography from the Royal College of Art in 2000. Hardy’s early work involved constructing environments in her studio, which were then photographed and subsequently dismantled. These carefully crafted sets were sculptural assemblages featuring found objects and handmade elements, often incorporating materials salvaged from markets, DIY shops, or urban skips. Examples include antlers, brightly colored cables, old Christmas trees, light bulbs, basketballs, balloons, and scientific glassware, alongside common building materials like unpainted plasterboard and visible foam sealant. Her photographic works from this period, such as ‘Lumber’ (2003) and ‘Untitled IV (balloons)’ (2005), gained significant recognition, with the latter acquired by the Victoria and Albert Museum in 2007.

Hardy’s career progressed from exhibiting photographic works to creating immersive, site-specific sculptural installations. These installations are characterized by environments that blur the line between realism and illusion, engaging viewers with carefully composed physical and audio landscapes and controlled perspectives. Her methodology often involves initially building structures that are later deconstructed, capturing them in photographic form before their physical disappearance. This practice allows her to explore themes of presence, absence, and the transient nature of her constructed realities. Her work has been published in monographs including ‘Anne Hardy – Secession’ (2012) and ‘Anne Hardy – TWIN FIELDS, FIELD, Fieldworks’ (2016), solidifying her position in contemporary art discourse.

Throughout her career, Hardy has participated in numerous national and international exhibitions, highlighting her evolving artistic approach. Key milestones include her inclusion in the 52nd International Venice Biennale art festival in 2007, her first USA solo exhibition at Bellwether Gallery in New York in 2008, and major solo shows at the Secession in Vienna (2012) and Kunstverein Freiburg (2014). Her work ‘Two Joined Fields’ was featured in the ‘Mirrorcity’ exhibition at the Hayward Gallery in London (2014-2015). A significant commission was ‘The Depth of Darkness, the Return of the Light’ for the Tate Britain Winter Commission in 2019, where she transformed the museum’s facade with light, drapery, and quadrophonic sound. More recently, she has been an Artist In Residence at the CHINATI FOUNDATION in Marfa, TX, and was nominated for the MARIO MERZ PRIZE in 2022. Her upcoming solo exhibition at VISUAL Carlow, Ireland, is scheduled for January – May 2026, and she recently released a new publication, ‘SURVIVAL SPELL’, co-published by Maureen Paley, London and Dent–de–Leone.
