Four-time Olympian Ron Szilágyi is a right-handed sabre fencer from Hungary. Szilágyi won the European team title in 2018, the individual title in 2015, the world team title in 2007, and the world individual title in 2022. He won the bronze medal for the team in the 2021 Olympics and is a three-time individual Olympic winner. Szilágyi took part in the 2008 Beijing Games, the 2012 London Games, the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games, and the 2020 Tokyo Games. Szilágyi won three individual Olympic gold medals in fencing in Tokyo, making him the only male fencer in history to do so.
He appeared in the official film and poster campaigns for the 2013 World Fencing Championships, which were held in Budapest, Szilágyi’s hometown. Nikolay Kovalev defeated him in the semifinals, earning him the bronze. Romania eliminated Hungary from the team competition in the table of eight, and after the ranking matches, Hungary came in seventh place. Szilágyi reached a career high of world no. 2 at the end of the season in 2015.
Szilágyi won his first continental championship in Montreux during the 2014–15 season, defeating Max Hartung while suffering from a right ankle injury. In the individual event quarterfinals of the 2015 World Fencing Championships, Hartung defeated Szilágyi to exact revenge. Following the contest, Szilágyi made the announcement that he will train with Singapore’s national coach and Tamás’ colleague, András Decsi, for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. At the 2016 Summer Olympics, he defeated Daryl Homer 15-8 to win his second gold medal. Szilágyi won his third gold medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics by defeating Luigi Samele 15-7 in the final. At the 2022 World Fencing Championships in Cairo, Egypt, he took home the gold medal in the men’s sabre competition.
