About

Benjamin Abraham Horowitz was born on June 13, 1966, in London, England, and raised in Berkeley, California. He pursued higher education in computer science, earning a BA from Columbia University in 1988 and an MS from UCLA in 1990. His early career began as an engineer at Silicon Graphics in 1990. In 1995, he joined Marc Andreessen at Netscape as a product manager, where he eventually became vice president for the Directory and Security Product Line. Following Netscape’s acquisition by AOL in 1998, Horowitz served as Vice President of AOL’s E-commerce Division, overseeing the development of their flagship Shop@AOL service.

In September 1999, Horowitz co-founded Loudcloud with Marc Andreessen, Tim Howes, and In Sik Rhee. Loudcloud provided infrastructure and application hosting services to large enterprises like Ford Motor Company, Nike, Inc., and the United States Army. He led Loudcloud through its IPO on March 9, 2001, and subsequently transformed it into Opsware, an enterprise software company, in June 2002. This transformation involved selling Loudcloud’s managed services business to Electronic Data Systems for $63.5 million. Horowitz grew Opsware to over $100 million in annual revenue and 550 employees before selling it to Hewlett-Packard for $1.6 billion in cash in July 2007. After the acquisition, he spent a year at Hewlett-Packard as Vice President and General Manager in HP Software, managing 3,000 employees and $2.8 billion in annual revenue.

Building on his extensive experience, Horowitz co-founded the venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz with Marc Andreessen on July 6, 2009. The firm began with an initial capitalization of $300 million and expanded to $2.7 billion under management across three funds within three years. He is also a New York Times bestselling author of “The Hard Thing About Hard Things” and “What You Do Is Who You Are.” Horowitz established the a16z Cultural Leadership Fund to connect cultural leaders with technology companies and increase African American representation in the tech industry. He currently serves on the boards of Anyscale, Databricks, Mayvenn, NationBuilder, Navan, and UnitedMasters.
