Former captain of the England national side Casey Stoney is now a football manager and coach who has worked with teams around the world.
Stoney was always a talented footballer, joining Chelsea Ladies when she was just 12 years old. She was also a part of the England side’s junior squads throughout her early years as a player, making her senior debut in 2000. Her international career went on to be hugely successful, playing more than 100 times for her country. Part of the team for the UEFA Women’s Euros in 2005, Stoney also reached the finals of the prestigious competition in 2009 and played in two FIFA Women’s World Cups in 2007 and 2011. 2012 saw her named captain of not only the England national team but also Team GB who competed at the 2012 Olympic Games. Alongside her glittering international career, Stoney also played for several top flight football clubs including Charlton Athletic, Chelsea, Arsenal and finally Liverpool before retiring in 2018. Since her retirement from the pitch, she has gone on to join the management team at England, as well as working as head coach at Manchester United Women for three years.
Stoney has become known not only for her skill as a player and manager but also for being outspoken on issues in football including the quality of refereeing and the prejudice and obstacles faced by women’s football. She currently works as the head coach of the San Diego NWSL team and is a key figure in the sporting world.
