About

Born on August 28, 1962, in Denver, Colorado, David Andrew Leo Fincher developed an early fascination with filmmaking. At the age of eight, a documentary on the making of “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” inspired him to begin experimenting with an 8mm camera. His early career involved hands-on training, first loading cameras at Korty Films and later joining Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) in 1983 as an assistant cameraman and matte photographer. During his time at ILM, he contributed to notable productions like “Return of the Jedi” (1983) and “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” (1984). In 1984, Fincher left ILM to direct a television commercial for the American Cancer Society, which quickly brought him to the attention of Los Angeles producers and marked a turning point towards directing.

Fincher co-founded Propaganda Films in 1986, a production company noted for nurturing new directing talent. He honed his craft by directing numerous music videos and commercials for brands such as Levi’s, Nike, Pepsi, and Chanel. His music video work includes iconic pieces like Madonna’s “Express Yourself” (1989) and “Vogue” (1990), both earning him MTV Video Music Awards for Best Direction. These experiences proved to be a pivotal “film school,” teaching him to work efficiently with limited resources. His feature film debut, “Alien 3” (1992), faced studio challenges, but his breakthrough came with “Seven” (1995), a critical and commercial success that established his reputation for dark, stylish thrillers.

Throughout his career, Fincher has directed a series of acclaimed films such as “Fight Club” (1999), “Zodiac” (2007), “The Social Network” (2010), and “Gone Girl” (2014). He has received multiple Academy Award nominations for Best Director for “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” (2008), “The Social Network” (2010), and “Mank” (2020), winning a Golden Globe and a BAFTA for the latter two. His work has expanded into television, serving as an executive producer and director for Netflix series “House of Cards” (2013–2018) and “Mindhunter” (2017–2019), and co-creating “Love, Death & Robots” (2019–present). Fincher’s approach is characterized by extensive research, meticulous attention to detail, and a demanding directorial style that seeks authentic performances, making him one of the preeminent directors of his generation.
