Dayana Yastremska

Dayana Oleksandrivna Yastremska was born on May 15, 2000, in Odesa, Ukraine. Introduced to tennis by her grandfather at age five, she quickly showed promise, choosing to focus on the sport over gymnastics and swimming. Her early career on the ITF Junior Circuit saw successes, including reaching the final of the 12-and-under Junior Orange Bowl in 2012. Yastremska continued her junior career by appearing in the doubles final of the 2016 Australian Open and later reaching her only junior Grand Slam singles final at Wimbledon in 2016, achieving a career-high junior ranking of world No. 6. She credits her parents for their significant role in her athletic development.

Yastremska transitioned to the ITF Women’s Circuit in 2015, securing her first ITF title in March 2016 in Campinas, Brazil. Her WTA main draw debut came at the 2016 İstanbul Cup at age 15, and she earned her first WTA match win at the same tournament a year later. In 2018, she made her top 100 debut and won her first WTA Tour title at the Hong Kong Open without dropping a set. Her successful 2019 season included two more WTA titles at the Hua Hin Championships and the Internationaux de Strasbourg, propelling her ranking from No. 58 to No. 22 by year-end. She achieved top-25 status and reached the fourth round at Wimbledon, her best Grand Slam result at the time, and recorded her first top-10 victory against Karolína Plíšková at the Wuhan Open.

After a strong start to 2020 which saw her reach the final of the Premier-level Adelaide International, Yastremska faced a provisional doping suspension in early 2021. The International Tennis Federation (ITF) later ruled she bore no fault for the positive test, lifting the suspension in June 2021. Yastremska returned to competition and continued to work towards re-establishing her ranking, re-entering the top 100 in 2022 after reaching the final of the WTA Lyon Open. In 2023, she won her first WTA 125 Challenger title at the Poland Open. A significant milestone in 2024 was her run to the semifinals of the Australian Open as a qualifier, where she defeated two former Grand Slam champions and became the first qualifier in 46 years to reach this stage at the event, which led to her return to the top 30 in the WTA rankings. She has also represented Ukraine at the Olympic Games in 2020 and 2024.
