Ocon had already experienced Formula 1 driving when he took part in a two-day test for Lotus F1 in 2014, but just prior to his GP3 success, it was announced that he would enter the Mercedes Junior Team. Then in February 2016 he was called up to act as a reserve driver for the Renault Sort F1 team for the 2016 season. He made his F1 debut at the Belgian Grand Prix then for the 2017 season he joined Force India as part of his multi-year contract with Mercedes. He joined Renault for 2020 as a full-time driver, and after Renault rebranded as Alpine F1 Team for the 2021 season, he was partnered with the returning Fernando Alonso. He went on to claim his first F1 win that season at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
