Ewan Gordon McGregor was born on March 31, 1971, in Perth, Perthshire, Scotland. His parents, Carol Diane Lawson and James Charles McGregor, were both teachers. Raised in Crieff, McGregor left Morrison Academy at 16 to join the Perth Repertory Theatre. He pursued drama at Kirkcaldly in Fife for a year before enrolling in London’s Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He departed early to accept the role of Private Mick Hopper in Dennis Potter’s Channel 4 series “Lipstick on Your Collar” (1993). His initial significant film role was Alex Law in “Shallow Grave” (1994). This was followed by features like “The Pillow Book” (1995) and “Trainspotting” (1996), with the latter bringing him widespread public attention.
