Named in both Rolling Stone’s ‘25 Under 25’ list of artists changing the world in 2017 and Forbes ’30 Under 30’ list in the category of ‘Hollywood & Entertainment’ in 2020, actress, writer and director Hannah Marks is undoubtedly one to watch. Marks is best known for her role in the BBC America TV show Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, based on the novel series of the same name by Douglas Adams and starring Samuel Barnett and Lord of the Rings icon Elijah Wood. Marks played Amanda Brotzman, the sister of lead character Todd and a sufferer from the fictional disease ‘pararibulitis’, which causes vivid and painful hallucinations. The show received positive reviews and its cancelation in 2018 sparked a petition for its return which garnered over 100,000 signatures.
At the age of just 13, Marks was cast in the Universal Pictures feature comedy Accepted, starring Justin Long and Blake Lively. The role lead Marks to appear alongside other prominent child actors in the cover story of the June 4, 2006 issue of The New York Times Magazine, titled ‘Hollywood Elementary’. Her performance also resulted in the first of 2 nominations for a prestigious Young Artist Award, with the other being for her role in the 2009 ABC sci-fi series Flashforward.
Marks co-wrote, produced and starred in the 2018 comedy film Banana Split, alongside Liana Liberato and Dylan Sprouse. In 2019, Marks was named as the director for the highly anticipated film adaptation of the young adult novel Turtles All the Way Down, written by The Fault in Our Stars author John Green. The project will make Marks one of the youngest female directors ever hired for a Hollywood studio film.
