Joanna Brown is a Canadian athlete and member of the national team. She is currently one of Canada’s top-ranked Olympic distance triathletes. The 2018 Canadian Triathlete of the Year and Commonwealth Games bronze medalist, Brown, is now riding a wave of recent success. She originally made her international triathlon debut in 2009 and gained popularity in the triathlon world after winning a bronze medal in the ITU World Junior Championship at the 2010 Grand Final. After standing on the ITU podium for the first time, she knew she wanted to represent Canada at the Olympic Games.
Brown began her career at a relatively young age, competing in her first triathlon when she was 14. After just one year, she placed 1st at the Valleyfield Eastern Canadian Championships. After years of diligent practice and success, in 2011, Brown would end up representing Team Canada. She ended up making her ITU World Cup debut that same season. Brown had another great year in 2012 when she made her first appearance at the ITU World Triathlon Series, gained four podium spots at the Pan American Cup races, including one victory, and won a bronze medal at the ITU World U23 Championships at the ITU World Triathlon Grand Final.
Brown competes primarily in the World Triathlon Series (WTS), in which most of the races are Olympic distance and a few are sprints, which are half the distance in each discipline. Recently, she has been giving incredible performances at the WTS. At the 2018 and 2019 ITU WTS Olympic distance events in Montreal and Bermuda, Brown placed 4th and 3rd respectively.
