John Edwards

John Edwards is an American lawyer and former politician who represented North Carolina in the United States Senate from 1999 to 2005. He also served as the vice presidential nominee for the Democratic Party in the 2004 presidential election. After winning a significant $3.7 million medical malpractice verdict in 1984, John Edwards gained national recognition as a formidable plaintiff’s attorney. He began his distinguished legal career clerking for federal judge Franklin Dupree before joining Dearborn & Ewing in Nashville, Tennessee, where he focused on trial work for corporate clients.

In 1981, he returned to Raleigh, North Carolina, joining Tharrington, Smith & Hargrove. Edwards continued to secure substantial verdicts and settlements for clients, notably winning a landmark $25 million product liability lawsuit against Sta-Rite in 1996 for a child injured by a defective pool drain. He co-founded his own firm, Kirby & Holt, in Raleigh in 1993, which later became Edwards Kirby. His legal acumen was built upon his Juris Doctor with honors from the University of North Carolina School of Law in 1977.

In his current capacity, he continues to specialize in medical malpractice cases, leveraging his extensive experience as a plaintiff’s attorney to represent clients in high-stakes litigation. His career reflects a sustained commitment to legal advocacy and public service, marked by significant achievements in both the courtroom and legislative chambers.
