Julia Jones was born on January 23, 1981, in Boston, Massachusetts, to Frank Jones and Penny Wells. She has a younger brother named Cody. Her mother is of English descent, and her father has Choctaw, Chickasaw, and African-American heritage. She was raised in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood of Boston, where she began her performing arts training at an early age. Jones studied at the Boston Ballet School starting at age four and later became involved in commercials and community theatre by age eight. She completed her secondary education at Boston Latin School, graduating in 1999. Following high school, she attended Columbia University, earning a bachelor’s degree in English in 2005. During her college years, Jones also pursued a modeling career, appearing in campaigns for brands such as Levi’s, Esprit, and Polo Ralph Lauren.
Jones’s acting career began to gain momentum with appearances in independent films, leading to her casting in Quentin Tarantino’s produced biker film, ‘Hell Ride,’ which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2008. From 2008 to 2009, she took on the role of Dr. Kaya Montoya in the final two seasons of the long-running NBC series ‘ER.’ In 2009, she performed as Dacotah in the Culture Clash play ‘Palestine, New Mexico’ at The Mark Taper Forum. A significant turning point in her career was being cast as Leah Clearwater in ‘The Twilight Saga’ film series, appearing in ‘Eclipse’ (2010), ‘Breaking Dawn – Part 1’ (2011), and ‘Breaking Dawn – Part 2’ (2012).
Her filmography includes diverse projects across film and television. In 2015, she starred opposite Adam Sandler in ‘The Ridiculous 6’ and also had a recurring role as Gabriella Langton on the Netflix series ‘Longmire.’ She further showcased her talent in critical projects such as ‘Wind River’ (2017) alongside Jeremy Renner, ‘Cold Pursuit’ (2019) with Liam Neeson, and the Disney+ series ‘The Mandalorian’ (2019) as Omera. More recently, Jones held leading and recurring roles in several prominent television series, including ‘Goliath’ (2019) as Stephanie, ‘Rutherford Falls’ (2021–2022) as Sally, ‘Dexter: New Blood’ (2021–2022) as Chief Angela Bishop, and ‘Echo’ (2023) as Chafa. She continues to contribute to the industry with upcoming projects such as ‘The Weight’ and ‘Rez Ball.’
