Her parents, Roger Winslet and Sally Anne Bridges-Winslet, were stage actors, and her maternal grandparents operated the Reading Repertory Theatre. Winslet began acting at an early age, securing her first professional role at eleven in a commercial and undertaking formal training at a performing arts high school. Her early career included appearances on stage and minor roles in sitcoms. Her breakthrough came at age 17 when she was cast in “Heavenly Creatures” (1994), a critical success.
