Kauli Vaast was born on February 26, 2002, in Vairao, Tahiti, French Polynesia. He began surfing at the age of six, having first ridden a surfboard with his father at four. At eight years old, Vaast surfed Teahupo’o for the first time and won a local competition, which motivated him to pursue competitive surfing in France. His early career saw him develop skills in both heavy and small wave conditions, traveling globally and winning numerous junior events.
Vaast’s career progression includes three WSL European Junior Champion titles in 2017, 2019, and 2020. In 2019, he won the Tahiti Pro Trials, earning a wildcard entry to the Tahiti Pro Teahupo’o, where he reached the Round of 16. He further demonstrated his performance at the Outerknown Tahiti Pro in 2022, securing second place. In 2023, he achieved his first WQS victory at the Rip Curl Pro Search Taghazout Bay in Morocco. His consistent performance led to his qualification for the 2024 Olympic Games, where he earned a gold medal in the men’s shortboard event, marking a significant milestone in his professional career.
His achievements include a bronze medal at the 2024 ISA World Surfing Games and multiple silver medals in team events at the Word Games in 2023, 2024 and 2025. These accomplishments highlight his development as a prominent figure in professional surfing.
