Regarded as the best driver of his generation, legendary petrolhead Sir Lewis Hamilton is a professional racing driver, who competes in Formula 1 for Mercedes. He has won a joint-record seven World Drivers’ Championship titles, and holds the most career records for drivers, including most wins, pole positions, and podium finishes. He is also an environmentalist, philanthropist, and activist, and was knighted for his services to racing in 2021.
Born and raised in Stevenage, Hamilton started go-karting when he was six-years-old, and quickly began winning races and cadet class championships. In 1998 he joined the McLaren Young Drivers Programme, and after working his way up through the racing classes, he started driving F1’s for McLaren in 2007, making him the first black driver to race the series. He set numerous records in his inaugural season, marking his first win at the Canadian Gand Prix, and in 2008 he won his maiden title to become the then youngest F1 World Champion in history. He stayed with McLaren for six years, then in 2013 he joined Mercedes, with whom he went on to win a further six titles in 2014, 2015, and consecutively between 2017 and 2020.
