Liam Lawson is a talented New Zealand racing driver who is set to compete in Formula One for RB. Born on June 24, 2002, Lawson’s motorsport journey began in karting, where he quickly showcased his skill and determination. Under the mentorship of three-time New Zealand Grand Prix winner Ken Smith, Lawson transitioned to junior formulae in 2015, claiming his first championship at the 2016–17 NZ F1600 Championship as a privateer, establishing himself as a formidable competitor.
Following his early success, Lawson continued to rise through the ranks, finishing runner-up in the Australian F4, ADAC F4, and Euroformula Open championships between 2017 and 2019. His crowning achievement during this period came when he won the Toyota Racing Series in 2019 with M2 Competition. In 2020, he progressed to FIA Formula 3, and by 2021, he was competing in Formula 2, where he finished third in the standings with Carlin Motorsport, demonstrating his potential for higher-level racing.
Lawson joined the Red Bull Junior Team in 2019 and served as a reserve driver for both Red Bull and AlphaTauri from 2022 to 2024. His Formula One debut came at the 2023 Dutch Grand Prix, where he stepped in for an injured Daniel Ricciardo and made an immediate impact by scoring points in Singapore. In 2024, he replaced Ricciardo full-time at the newly re-branded RB team, solidifying his position in the sport.
In addition to his Formula One endeavors, Lawson showcased his versatility by competing in the 2021 Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters for Red Bull AF Corse, finishing as runner-up in a controversial finale.
