Football legend turned actor and singer Linden King played 13 seasons in the NFL before transitioning into music. The former linebacker played nine seasons for the San Diego Chargers and four for the Los Angeles Raiders before becoming the lead singer of country band Linden King and Southern Steel in the 1990s. As an actor he made his debut in the 1989 movie Worth Winning and also appeared in Gothic Assassins (2012) and Monster On (2020).
King was born in Memphis, Tennessee, and was a standout footballer at Air Academy High School in Colorado Springs. He continued to impress at Colorado State University as a defensive back and linebacker, earning All-WAC honors in his senior year of 1976 and later being inducted to the Colorado State University Athletics Hall of Fame. Selected by the San Diego Chargers in the third round of the 1977 NFL draft, he stayed with the side for nine seasons before moving on to the Raiders. Known by his first name of Linden in the NFL, he recorded eight interceptions for 118 yards during his NFL career before retiring in 1989.
After football, King stayed in the limelight thanks to his music career as the lead vocalist in country outfit Linden King and Southern Steel. Well known for their performances at The Neon Cactus night club, the band also gained notoriety for their version of ‘Riders in the Sky’ named ‘Ghostriders’, which spawned a whole new country dance titled Ghostrider.
