Alfred Joel Horford Reynoso, born on June 3, 1986, in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, is a professional basketball player for the Golden State Warriors of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Growing up, Horford’s father, Tito Horford, was also a professional basketball player, influencing Al’s early athletic development. His family relocated to Lansing, Michigan, where he attended Grand Ledge High School. During his high school career, Horford excelled, setting seven school records, including most career points. As a senior, he was recognized as ‘Class A Player of the Year,’ averaging 21 points, 13 rebounds, and five blocks per game. These early achievements laid the foundation for his entry into collegiate basketball.
Horford accepted an athletic scholarship to the University of Florida, where he played for the Florida Gators. He became a key player, starting as center for their back-to-back National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) national championship teams in 2006 and 2007. His college career was marked by consistent performance, culminating in him being drafted as the third overall pick in the 2007 NBA draft by the Atlanta Hawks. Over his nine seasons with the Hawks, Horford earned multiple NBA All-Star selections and solidified his reputation as a reliable and versatile frontcourt player. His professional journey continued with stints at the Boston Celtics, Philadelphia 76ers, and Oklahoma City Thunder, before returning to the Celtics.
In his second tenure with the Celtics, Horford played a vital role in their success, including reaching the NBA Finals in 2022 and 2024. In 2024, he achieved a significant career milestone, winning his first NBA championship. This victory marked him as the first Dominican player to win an NBA title, an achievement that was recognized with the Order of Merit of Duarte, Sánchez and Mella, the highest civilian and military honor in the Dominican Republic. Following his championship, Horford continued his career with the Golden State Warriors, signing a contract in 2025.
