The title of most-watched sports presenter in Australia belongs to Mark Beretta. From his first presenting roles in the mid-1990s onwards, he has become synonymous with sports reporting. He is perhaps best known for his role as host and sports presenter on Sunrise, a breakfast show broadcast on the Seven Network. He has hosted their coverage of most of the major sporting events of the last two decades, including the Olympics, Commonwealth Games, as well as numerous car-racing events.
Although most well-known as a sports presenter, Beretta was himself a champion sportsman long before he set foot in a television studio. During a 16-year-long career as a water skier, he was the Australian champion an amazing ten times. In the late 1980s, he became a sports reporter on radio, working for different stations before landing his first television job as a basketball commentator for Channel Ten. After impressing in this role, he was offered a reporting job by Seven Network, one of the five major Australian TV channels. His success has allowed him to branch out into other roles: he hosted a quiz show, The Master, and was a contestant on the ever-popular Dancing with the Stars. He has also published a book, The Riders: Australia’s Motorcycle Champions.
A committed charity ambassador, Beretta has several times completed the Tour de Cure, a gruelling bike ride between Australian cities that has raised millions of dollars for cancer research. He is also an ambassador and advocate for the likes of the Fight Cancer Foundation, Australian Paramedic Support Foundation, and Children’s Cancer Institute.
