About

The Australian hard rock band Baby Animals was established in Sydney in October 1989. The original lineup included Frank Celenza on drums, Suze DeMarchi on lead vocals and guitar, Dave Leslie on guitar and backing vocals, and Eddie Parise on bass guitar and backing vocals. Suze DeMarchi, originally from Perth, had prior experience recording solo singles with EMI in the United Kingdom. Upon her return to Australia, she collaborated with former bandmates to form the group. Their initial performances were under the name Woody’s Heroes before settling on Baby Animals, a name reportedly inspired by a local television show.

The band’s early career saw them gain exposure by having their demo, “Break My Heart,” featured on the B-side of The Angels’ single “Dogs Are Talking” in April 1990. This led to a national tour supporting The Angels alongside other new rock and roll bands. In August 1990, Baby Animals secured a publishing deal with SBK Songs, which later became EMI Music Publishing. Following a live performance, Terry Ellis, president of the newly formed Imago Recording Company, signed the band to his label, which was supported by BMG. Ellis noted DeMarchi’s unique stage presence and talent, remarking that she possessed an “indefineable magic” that set her apart.

Baby Animals’ self-titled debut album, recorded in New York with producer Mike Chapman, was released in September 1991. It achieved significant success, debuting at number 6 on the ARIA Albums Charts before spending six weeks at number 1. The album remained in the top 50 for 46 weeks and was certified four times platinum by ARIA, selling over 280,000 units. Their debut single, “Early Warning” (April 1991), reached the Top 30, followed by “Rush You” (August), also in the Top 30, and “One Word” (February 1992), which peaked at No. 15 on the ARIA Singles Chart. The band garnered three ARIA Music Awards in 1992 for Album of the Year, Breakthrough Artist – Album for their debut, and Breakthrough Artist – Single for “Early Warning.” Their success led to touring opportunities with Bryan Adams in Europe and Van Halen across the US, playing to arena-size audiences.
