Martin Ponsiluoma was born on September 8, 1995, in Östersund, Sweden. Ponsiluoma’s entry into biathlon began at a young age, with his father, Jyrki Ponsiluoma, a former cross-country skier, having an influence on his early athletic development. He started skiing early, though he initially did not show a strong passion for it until around age 14. His first biathlon competition saw him miss nine out of ten shots; however, a subsequent race where his father offered candy for each successful shot marked a turning point, improving his shooting accuracy significantly.
Ponsiluoma made his World Cup debut in 2017 and began steadily establishing himself as a reliable biathlete. A significant milestone in his career came in 2018 at Nove Mesto na Morave, Czech Republic, where he secured his first individual World Cup podium finish with a third-place in the sprint event. He continued to develop, and the 2020/21 BMW IBU World Cup season marked a breakthrough. During this season, he achieved a gold medal in the Sprint at the IBU World Championships in Pokljuka, doing so with clean shooting. He exited the Pokljuka championships with a full set of medals, including a Relay Silver and Mixed Relay Bronze. His performance in the 2020-21 season placed him tenth in the World Cup Total Score.
Ponsiluoma’s career has included participation in multiple major international biathlon events. He competed in the 2018 and 2022 Winter Olympics. At the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, he earned a silver medal in the 15 km mass start event. He has also medaled at several World Championships, accumulating a total of seven medals (2 gold, 2 silver, 3 bronze) across various disciplines and team events. His success reflects consistent performance in both individual and relay formats, demonstrating his skill as a sprint specialist, a discipline where three of his four career individual podiums have occurred. Outside of competition, Ponsiluoma enjoys fly fishing in streams and lakes near his home in Östersund.
