Matthew Mooney is a professional basketball player from the United States. After transferring from the Air Force Falcons, he played college basketball for the Texas Tech Red Raiders and South Dakota. Here Mooney averaged 6.9 points per game. As a sophomore he played for South Dakota, guiding the club to a regular season championship. He was named to the Summit League’s first team and was named newcomer of the year. He was chosen to the All-Summit League First Team once more. Mooney decided to transfer as a graduate student after the season, choosing Texas Tech.
Texas Tech had just finished a season in which they had advanced to the Elite Eight. He went on to assist the team to its first-ever Final Four, where he teamed up with Jarrett Culver. In the Elite Eight, Mooney scored 17 points in a win over Gonzaga. In 2019, Mooney scored 22 points in Texas Tech’s first Final Four trip, a 61-51 victory over Michigan State to progress to the 2019 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship game.
Mooney was then chosen to the All-Tournament Team for the 2019 season. He played for the Memphis Hustle from 2019–2020 as a professional basketball player. Mooney went on to join the Atlanta Hawks’ Summer League roster after being undrafted in the 2019 NBA draft. He then transferred to the Cavaliers of Cleveland, and was signed to split his time between the Cavs and their G League affiliate. He made his NBA debut that year, but was soon released from his contract. In 2021, Mooney was one of the new players included on the Raptors 905 roster.
