Matthew Nable

Matthew Nable, born on March 8, 1972, in Northern Beaches, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, embarked on his career as a professional rugby league footballer. He played in the Winfield Cup Premiership during the 1990s for prominent teams such as the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles and the South Sydney Rabbitohs. His early life also included two years spent in Portsea, Victoria, due to his father’s military station, and a period in Albury. Nable’s family background includes his father working as a trainer for the Australian national rugby league team and his brother, Adam Nable, also becoming a professional player. After his time with Manly-Warringah, where he made five appearances between 1991 and 1992, he moved to the South Sydney Rabbitohs in 1995 for three games. He then played a season in England for Carlisle and later for the London Broncos. Following his rugby career, Nable engaged in amateur boxing, competing for the state light-heavyweight title, and worked as a beer salesman and personal trainer before pursuing a writing career.

Nable’s transition into the creative arts began with writing. Encouraged by author Thomas Keneally, he penned the screenplay for “The Final Winter” (2007), based on his unpublished novel. This project marked his debut as both a writer and actor. Despite the film’s critical acclaim, it did not achieve commercial success. However, it revealed Nable’s acting capabilities, leading him to accept roles in various productions. He appeared as a Los Angeles detective in the 2008 television movie “S.I.S.” and continued to develop his writing, publishing the books “We Don’t Live Here Anymore” in 2009 and “Faces in the Clouds” in 2011, the latter receiving critical praise. He also contributed as a writer to Channel 7’s “The Matty Johns Show.”

Matthew Nable’s acting career progressed with significant roles in both Australian and international productions. He was part of the main cast in the SBS drama series “East West 101” and gained recognition in action films like “Killer Elite” (2011) alongside Clive Owen and Robert De Niro, and “Riddick” (2013) with Vin Diesel. His television work further expanded with roles in “Bikie Wars: Brothers in Arms” and “Underbelly: Badness” in 2012. A notable role came in 2014 when he was cast as Ra’s al Ghul in Season 3 of The CW’s “Arrow,” a role he reprised in “Legends of Tomorrow.” More recently, he was featured in the opening cinematic for the 2019 Bathurst 1000 for Fox Sports Australia, and from 2018 to 2021, he had a recurring role in “Mr Inbetween.” In 2023, Nable made his directorial debut with the film “Transfusion,” which he also wrote and starred in.
