An influential figure on and off the pitch, rugby union star Megan Jones has won silverware in both sevens and XVs. Born in Cardiff, Wales but now an England international, Jones won the Women’s Six Nations in 2021 and came close to the podium at the Tokyo Summer Olympic Games in 2021 when Team GB finished fourth. She previously made history as her England’s youngest ever women’s player in the sport after making her international Sevens debut at 17 years old, and during the national Covid lockdown in November 2020 partnered with Lions Sports Academy to provide children with free online fitness sessions.
Born in Cardiff, Jones speaks Welsh fluently but qualified to play for England through her mother. She began playing rugby when she was just six years old at Glamorgan Wanderers, and moved to Hartpury College ten years later before studying Sports Science and Management while continuing to play the sport she loves at the Gloucester institution. After making her international Sevens debut she broke in the England XVs side, and in 2017 scored in England’s semi-final victory over France at the Women’s World Cup.
Before the 2017-18 World Sevens Series Jones joined the England Sevens programme and won bronze at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. After her career was momentarily interrupted when funding was cut for Women’s Rugby during the Covid-19 pandemic, she returned to XVs with Wasps in the autumn of 2020 and went on to co-captain Great Britain to their impressive fourth place at the Tokyo Olympic Games. As RFU funding was restored she returned to the World Sevens Series with England for the 2021-22 campaign after winning the Six Nations in 2021.
