Curran, known by her stage name Mercedes Iman Diamond, was born on December 12, 1987, in Mombasa, Kenya. She moved to the United States at the age of eleven and later established her drag persona at the Gay 90s club in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Mercedes Iman Diamond developed her craft through pageantry, winning the Miss Gay 90s pageant in 2016. She also earned the title of Miss City of the Lakes and was the second alternate in the Miss Minnesota Continental pageant, building a foundation for her future career in drag entertainment.
In 2019, Mercedes Iman Diamond gained national recognition as the first Muslim contestant on season 11 of RuPaul’s Drag Race. Her time on the show was marked by memorable moments, including an acting challenge where her pronunciation of “opulence” became a viral internet meme, later remixed into a dance track by Adam Joseph. During her participation, she openly discussed her experiences with racial profiling and being placed on the No Fly List due to her Kenyan background, as well as suffering a stroke while competing in a pageant. She portrayed Ivanka Trump in the “Trump: The Rusical” challenge. After being eliminated in the fourth episode, Mercedes Iman Diamond continued to perform and advocate for LGBTQ+ and Muslim communities.
Post-Drag Race, Mercedes Iman Diamond has maintained an active presence in the drag community and on social media. She continues to tour and perform in drag shows, meeting fans and promoting her message of authenticity and perseverance. In 2022, she performed alongside fellow Drag Race contestant Jaidynn Diore Fierce at the inaugural drag brunch in Ely, Minnesota, further expanding the reach of drag artistry.
