About

Michael Nutter was born on June 29, 1957, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He grew up in West Philadelphia and attended Transfiguration of Our Lord Catholic Elementary School before moving on to St. Joseph’s Preparatory School. Nutter then pursued higher education at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 1979 with a degree in business. His early career included working at Xerox and an investment banking firm. Prior to his mayoral tenure, Nutter served as the 52nd Ward Democratic Leader until 1990.

Nutter’s public service career began in the Philadelphia City Council, where he served from January 7, 1992, to July 7, 2006. During his time on the council, he advocated for various initiatives, including a measure mandating registration for college students, and in September 2004, he introduced legislation to create an independent Ethics Board with updated city Ethics Code. He sponsored “The Clean Indoor Air Worker Protection Law,” expanding non-smoking areas, and implemented a local bidder preference program for Philadelphia businesses on city contracts over $25,000. He also chaired the Pennsylvania Convention Center Authority Board from February 2003 until April 2007.

Michael Nutter was elected as the 98th Mayor of Philadelphia, serving from January 7, 2008, to January 4, 2016. During his mayoral terms, Nutter focused on public safety, sustainability, and education. He launched the “PhillyRising Collaborative” in 2010 to address crime and disorder in specific neighborhoods. He also initiated the Mayor’s Office of Reintegration Services for Ex-offenders (RISE) to support returning citizens and created Cities United in 2011 to reduce youth violence. In terms of sustainability, Nutter introduced “Greenworks” in 2009, a plan aimed at making Philadelphia a greener city by 2015, and in 2012, he signed a bill requiring large commercial buildings to benchmark energy and water usage. For education, he established the Mayor’s Office of Education in 2008 and launched the Philadelphia Education Supplies Fund in 2013.
