Nigel Winterburn is a former English footballer who spent his most successful years playing forArsenal as part of the famous ‘Back Four’ during the late 1980s and early 1990s. A fierce tackler with plenty of tactical intelligence, Winterburn earned legendary status at Highbury, winning countless trophies during his 13 years serving the club, including three league titles, two FA Cups, a LeagueCup and a European Cup Winners Cup, and earning himself a call up for the England National Team.
Highly respected by Arsenal fans and fellow players, he also had stints at Birmingham City, Oxford United, Wimbledon and West Ham, and now works for former club Arsenal as a broadcaster, and is a regular pundit for BT Sport.Born in Arley, Warwickshire, Winterburn’s career kicked off at Birmingham City, followed by a spell at Oxford United. A move to Wimbledon saw him win the supporters Player of the Year and reach an FA Cup quarter final before coming to the attention of Arsenal’s George Graham, who secured Winterburn’s move to Highbury for £350,000 in 1987.
Winterburn went on to serve Arsenal for 13 years, and became well-known for his part in Arsenal’s strong back four that went to win a host of cups and claim three league titles in 1989, 1991 and 1998. He also earned himself two call ups to the England national side, and after 440 caps for Arsenal moved to West Ham to play more top flight football before hanging up his boots in 2003.Winterburn has concentrated on a media career since retiring from the game, and is in popular demand as a broadcaster, regularly working for his old club Arsenal and appearing on BT Sport Score on BT Sports.
