Born in Naples, Campania, Italy, in 1970, Paolo Sorrentino became an orphan at the age of 16 after losing both parents. He initially pursued studies in economics at the University of Naples Federico II before shifting his focus to the film industry at 25. His career as a screenwriter began in 1998 with “The Dust of Naples,” and he soon transitioned into directing short films like “L’amore non ha confini” (1998) and “La notte lunga” (2001). His feature-length directorial debut, “One Man Up” (2001), earned him early recognition, including the Nastro D’Argento for Best First Time Director.
Sorrentino’s international profile grew significantly with films like “The Consequences of Love” (2004), which was selected in Competition at the Cannes Film Festival and garnered five David di Donatello awards. His biographical drama “Il Divo” (2008), a portrayal of Italian politician Giulio Andreotti, won the Prix du Jury at Cannes. He later made his English-language feature debut with “This Must Be the Place” (2011), starring Sean Penn. A major turning point in his career was “The Great Beauty” (2013), a film that earned critical acclaim and secured an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and a BAFTA for Best Foreign Language Film. He continued his work in television, creating and directing the HBO series “The Young Pope” (2016) and its sequel “The New Pope” (2019).
His deeply personal film, “The Hand of God” (2021), set in Naples, explored autobiographical elements and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. Sorrentino maintains a consistent artistic vision, often collaborating with actor Toni Servillo and exploring themes of identity and Italian society. His ongoing projects continue to receive international attention, affirming his position as a prominent figure in contemporary cinema. In 2025, he is expected to receive the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo Award for his contributions to film.
