About

Alaina Marie Beaton, known professionally as Porcelain Black, was born on October 1, 1985, in Detroit, Michigan. Her early life was marked by a passion for dance, training in jazz, hip-hop, tap, and ballet with aspirations for Broadway or a career as a backup dancer. The separation of her parents at age six, followed by moves and attending high school in Rochester, shaped her experiences, leading to expulsions for fighting. The death of her biological father when she was 16 significantly impacted her, after which she engaged in a period of homelessness, substance use, and drinking before returning to Detroit and stopping drug use. At 18, she moved to Los Angeles, driven by a manager’s advice, and soon after secured a contract with Virgin Records.

Her career began under the name Porcelain and the Tramps. She faced creative differences with Virgin Records, who desired a more pop-oriented sound similar to Avril Lavigne, conflicting with her industrial rock vision. This led her to independently release music on MySpace, accumulating over 10 million views. After a three-year struggle to exit her contract, she signed with RedOne’s 2101 Records/Universal Republic imprint in 2009. She adopted the stage name Porcelain Black to avoid confusion and began working on her debut album. Her debut single, “This Is What Rock n’ Roll Looks Like,” featuring Lil Wayne, became a modest hit on Billboard’s Dance Club chart, followed by “Naughty Naughty,” which peaked at number 6. She was an opening act for Lil Wayne’s I Am Music Tour and made her television debut on the ‘Late Show with David Letterman’ in 2011.

Throughout her career, Porcelain Black has also established herself as a notable songwriter for other artists, including One Direction, Orianthi, The Used, and Belinda. She made a cameo appearance in the 2012 film ‘Rock of Ages’ as a singer, further diversifying her artistic portfolio. Despite numerous setbacks and delays with her debut album ‘Mannequin Factory’, she continued to release singles such as “One Woman Army”, which achieved top-forty success in France, Spain, and Wallonia, becoming her first number-one hit on the French iTunes chart. After parting ways with 2101 Records due to creative differences, she embarked on an independent career, releasing the EP ‘313’ in 2017 and is currently working on her full-length independent debut album, scheduled for 2025.
