About

Robert Lee Greene Jr., known as Spice 1, was born on July 2, 1970, in Bryan, Texas. He later became a prominent figure in the Hayward, California, music community, attending Mt. Eden High School. His musical career began in 1988, gaining significant traction in 1991. Early in his career, Greene transitioned from selling drugs to focusing entirely on music after receiving his first substantial payment. His stage name, Spice 1, is an acronym for “Sex, Pistols, Indo, Cash and Entertainment.”
Prior to his solo success, Spice 1 was a member of The Dangerous Crew in the late 1980s, an important foundation for his development as an artist. He signed with Jive Records and released several albums that helped define the West Coast hip-hop sound of the early to mid-1990s. Three of his albums—”Spice 1″ (1992), “187 He Wrote” (1993), and “AmeriKKKa’s Nightmare” (1994)—achieved RIAA gold certification, marking him as a commercially successful artist.
In 2007, Greene was involved in a shooting incident outside his parents’ Hayward home, from which he recovered. Throughout his career, he has been known for his vivid storytelling and influential contributions to gangsta rap. He has also engaged in collaborative projects, forming groups like Criminalz with Celly Cel and Thug Lordz with C-Bo and Yukmouth, demonstrating his continued presence and impact in the hip-hop landscape.
