An San

An San, born on February 27, 2001, in Gwangju, South Korea, quickly rose to prominence in the world of archery. A graduate of Kwangju Women’s University, her early career saw her securing a mixed team medal at the 2017 World Archery Youth Championships. Her international debut at the 2019 Archery World Cup in Berlin was notably successful, where she earned gold in the women’s individual, gold in the mixed team, and bronze in the women’s team event. In 2020, she achieved a score of 1400 in the WA 1440 Round, demonstrating consistent high performance.

An San made history at the 2020 Summer Olympics by becoming the first archer to win three gold medals at a single Olympic Games. She secured gold in the women’s team event with Jang Min-hee and Kang Chae-young, in the mixed team event with Kim Je-deok, and in the individual women’s competition, where she also set a new Olympic record with 680 points in the ranking round. Following her Olympic success, she continued to excel at the 2021 World Archery Championships in Yankton, earning gold medals in both the women’s team and mixed team events, and a bronze in the women’s individual event.

After missing out on the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, An San utilized this unexpected break for personal development and rehabilitation. This period allowed her to rediscover her passion for archery and make subtle but impactful adjustments to her technique and equipment, including growing 2cm taller and adjusting her arrow length. She successfully qualified for the Republic of Korea national team for the 2025 World Archery Championships, which will be held in her hometown of Gwangju. An San aims to represent her hometown and contribute to her team’s success, with a primary goal of achieving a gold medal in the team event to hear the national anthem on home soil.
