Steve Lutz is a highly accomplished men’s college basketball coach with over two decades of experience in the field. He is currently the head men’s college basketball coach for the Conference USA team Western Kentucky, and was a recipient of the Southland Coach of the Year award in 2023.
Born in San Antonio, Texas, Lutz revelled in playing basketball and baseball during his high school years before playing one season of basketball at Ranger Junior College and later, at Texas Lutheran. Lutz started his coaching career in style at the University of Incarnate Word and Garden City CC in Kansas, where he led the Cardinals to a remarkable 99-20 record during his four-year tenure. He then moved on to coach at Stephen F. Austin, SMU, Creighton, and Purdue before being appointed as the head coach at Texas A&M Corpus Christi in 2021. Lutz successfully turned the program around during his two-year tenure, leading the Islanders to their first-ever NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament victory and a 67.1% win rate. In March 2023, Lutz was announced as the new head coach at Western Kentucky.
Known for his defensive expertise and his ability to develop players, Lutz is expected to bring his extensive experience to the “Hilltoppers” and lead the team to success in the upcoming seasons.
