Steven Da Costa, born on January 23, 1997, in Mont-Saint-Martin, France, is a distinguished French karateka. He specializes in the Kumite 67 kg category. Da Costa began his international competitive career at a young age, demonstrating significant potential. His early career saw him secure notable placements in European and World Championships, setting the foundation for his future successes.
Throughout his career, Da Costa has consistently achieved top honors in major karate events. He earned a silver medal at the 2015 European Games in Baku, Azerbaijan. In 2016, he achieved a double gold medal victory at the European Karate Championships in Montpellier, France, winning both the individual 67 kg event and the men’s team kumite. The same year, he won two bronze medals at the World Karate Championships in Linz, Austria. A significant turning point came in 2018 when he secured his first World Karate Championship gold medal in Madrid, Spain, in the 67 kg category, followed by another gold at the 2019 European Karate Championships in Guadalajara, Spain.
His career reached a pinnacle at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics, where karate made its debut. Da Costa won the gold medal in the men’s 67 kg event, making history as the first-ever male Olympic champion in karate. Following his Olympic success, he continued his dominance, securing additional World Karate Championship gold medals in 2021 and 2023, and further European Championship gold medals in 2022 and 2023. These achievements underscore his sustained performance and prominence in the sport of karate.
