Vince Cable is an English politician, who served as an MP more than 20 years, and as Leader of the Liberal Democrats for two years.
After graduating from Cambridge University and later Glasgow, Cable began his career in politics. He was an economic advisor to the Government of Kenya, and worked for the Commonwealth Secretariat during his early years as a politician. At the same time, he was a lecturer at the University of Glasgow and wrote publications on globalisation, free trade and economic affairs. It was in 1997 that he was elected to become MP for Twickenham, and his long tenure in Parliament began. He held the MP post from 1997- 2015, and then again from 2017- 2019, whilst also being elected Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrats in 2006 and holding the position of Liberal Democrat Treasury Spokesman. In 2010, Cable was appointed Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills as part of the coalition government, a position he held for 5 years. With his political career going from strength to strength, Cable stood to be leader of the Liberal Democrats in 2017, a position he was elected for unopposed. He then led the party to their best election performance since 2010, and was credited with helping them secure an additional 10 seats in the election.
Since leaving politics after the 2019 general election, Cable has become an in demand speaker and writer, sharing his views on everything from the environment to social policy.
