Vitalik Buterin

Vitalik Buterin, after publishing a seminal white paper proposing Ethereum in November 2013, departed from university in 2014 upon receiving a US$100,000 grant from the Thiel Fellowship to dedicate his efforts full-time to the project. As a key figure alongside Gavin Wood, Charles Hoskinson, Anthony Di Iorio, and Joseph Lubin, Buterin was instrumental in the official launch of the Ethereum platform on July 30, 2015. His early involvement in cryptocurrency began in 2011 when he started writing for Bitcoin Weekly, leading him to co-found Bitcoin Magazine with Mihai Alisie, becoming a leading writer for the publication. Under Buterin’s leadership, Ethereum significantly expanded its functionalities, introducing decentralized applications, ERC-20 tokens, and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) with the ERC-721 standard.

As a Canadian programmer and co-founder of Ethereum, an open-source blockchain computing platform, he continues to shape the trajectory of blockchain technology and its applications globally. His ongoing work focuses on scaling, security, and the long-term sustainability of the Ethereum ecosystem, while continuing his philanthropic efforts to advance critical research and global initiatives.
