Vitaly Dmitrievich Buterin was born in Kolomna, Russia, on January 31, 1994. At the age of six, he and his parents emigrated to Canada in search of better employment opportunities. In grade three, he was placed in a gifted program where he developed an interest in mathematics, programming, and economics. He later attended The Abelard School in Toronto. Buterin learned about Bitcoin from his father at age 17. He attended the University of Waterloo, where he took advanced courses and worked as a research assistant for cryptographer Ian Goldberg.
Buterin became involved with cryptocurrency in its early stages. In 2011, he started writing for *Bitcoin Weekly* and later co-founded *Bitcoin Magazine* with Mihai Alisie, becoming a leading writer for the publication. In November 2013, Buterin published a white paper proposing Ethereum. He departed from university in 2014 after receiving a US$100,000 grant from the Thiel Fellowship to dedicate his efforts to Ethereum full-time. The Ethereum platform officially launched on July 30, 2015, with Buterin as a key figure alongside Gavin Wood, Charles Hoskinson, Anthony Di Iorio, and Joseph Lubin.
Under Buterin’s leadership, Ethereum has grown significantly. It introduced functionalities like decentralized applications, ERC-20 tokens, and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) with the ERC-721 standard. On September 15, 2022, Ethereum transitioned its consensus mechanism from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake in an update known as “The Merge.” This change reduced the blockchain’s energy consumption by over 99%. Buterin has also made significant philanthropic contributions, donating substantial portions of his crypto holdings to various causes, including AI research, life extension, and COVID-19 relief efforts in India.
