Chinese table tennis player Wang Yidi is a multiple Universiade champion, a World Tour gold medallist, and a rapidly rising star of the game. Wang plays right-handed, with a shakehand grip, and entered the Top 20 of International Table Tennis Federation’s global rankings in 2019.
Hailing from the north-eastern Chinese province of Liaoning, Wang enjoyed considerable success on the junior circuit, and later rose the rankings to become the No. 2 player at under-21 level worldwide. In 2017, she was runner up in her age group at the Swedish Open in Stockholm, and the following year she would confirm her dominance, winning the Hong Kong Open, the Bulgarian Open, and the Czech Open in the under-21 category.
At the same time as this, Wang was making her mark on the senior game with a series of impressive performances on the World Tour. At the 2018 Bulgarian Open, she was the runner-up in the women’s seniors category, narrowly losing in a close-fought final to fellow Chinese champion Ding Ning. The following year, she came second in the doubles event at the World Tour Platinum Qatar Open in Doha, before winning the singles event at the Hong Kong Open to claim her first senior title. Shortly afterwards, Wang would storm the 2019 Universiade in Naples, representing China and winning gold medals in the women’s singles, women’s doubles, mixed doubles and women’s team events.
