While the MTV battle rap champion Wrekonize, aka Benjamin Miller, can bust with the best of them, it is often his knack for hooks and harmonies that give the group ¡Mayday! their eclectic and energetic sound. A multi-talented emcee, vocalist, and producer, Wrekonize has also developed a highly successful solo career through his three concept albums, A Soiree For Skeptics, The War Within, and Into the Further.
Wrekonize was born in London to parents from British and South African decent, and raised in Miami after his family moved to the United States when he was five-years-old. Wrekonize was always into his music and art, and at 11 he was introduced to MC Guru, who inspired him to make his own tunes. He was heavily involved in the graffiti scene by the time he was 13, then, in his late teens, he began finding an outlet through rap. His music career started proper in 2003 when he competed in MTV’s Battle II: The Takeover in Time Square to beat 10 fellow rappers, and won. Soon after, he was signed to SouthBeat Records, and released The Waiting Room Mixtape, which featured songs with Ras Kass and DJ Spinna. Despite the collapse of the label, the album had huge success online and Wrekonize then self-produced a second instalment, Elevator Music. At the same time he also began performing and collaborating with the Miami-based Hip-Hop group, ¡Mayday!. Eventually he was offered a vocal position and membership in the band full-time. Since then he has released numerous singles and EPs, three solo albums, and eight studio albums with ¡Mayday!, the latest being 2021’s Minute to Midnight.
Wrekonize regularly connects with his legions of dedicated followers and fans through Twitter, Instagram and Facebook, posting pictures and videos of his life in and out of the recording studio. He also has his own YouTube channel, WrekonizeTheMusic, streams on Twitch.tv, and has two official websites: wrekonizethemusic.com, and wrekonizeshop.com.
