Best known as a Russian rock musician, Zafira has been part of the music industry since 1998, and she has been popular not only in Russia but all over the former Soviet republics. Zamfira’s passion for music began at an early age. She was 4 years old when she entered music school to study piano performance and singing. When she turned 7, Zamfira wrote her first song. She was first introduced to rock music by her brother, which was when she found her preferred genre and fell in love with Black Sabbath, Queen and Nazareth. Although she kept her focus on music, Zemfira also spent her time playing basketball as the captain of the Russian Girls Junior Basketball team by 1990. Zamfira graduated from music school with honors in piano studies. After graduating, Zamfira took a job as a sound engineer at the Ufa subsidiary. In the meantime, she continued recording songs that would later become her singles. Zemfira’s first debut album took place at Mosfilm Moscow and it was released in May 1999. After the release of the album her and the band went on a tour and began working on the second album immediately. Zamfira and her band remained active in early 2000s, with their major hit titled PMML, or as it is known in English, Forgive Me My Love, which was described as Zemfiromania. In 2007, Zemfira reworked her top hits in different styles like ska, bossa nova, jazz and blues. She released another album later that year, titled Thank You, and compared to her previous albums, this one was perceived as more positive. So far, Zemfira has sold more than 3 million recorts. Her latest performance took place in 2020 as a headliner at the Stereoleto festival in Saint Petersburg.
