Katie Sowers was partnered with Dick’s Sporting Goods for an Instagram campaign in celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day. Sharing one post and two stories as part of the brand partnership, Katie opened up about her experience of how gender can affect opportunity in the sporting world, remarking that “when I was little, I always dreamed of playing football… but I knew my opportunities were limited because football was a sport, I thought, was only reserved for boys.” She also shared a social challenge centred around the #StrongerWithSports hashtag, which encouraged women to share how sports has positively impacted their lives.
“Many people are at work to break down these invisible barriers, which is why I have partnered with Dick’s to celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports day today.”
Katie Sowers
Described by Sky Sports as a “a trailblazer in the NFL for women and the LGBTQ community”, Katie Sowers became the first female to coach in the Super Bowl when the 49ers finished runners up to the Kansas City Chiefs last year. She made waves in the sporting community after becoming the second women to work as a full-time assistant coach in the NFL. After playing in the Women’s Football Alliance and the USA Footballs national team, Sowers began her career in the NFL in 2017 through a Diversity Coaching programme, working with Kyle Shanahan of the Falcons. Speaking about the ground-breaking advancements in sport that she’s made, Sowers commented “being the first, it is historic. There always has to be a first to make a change but the most important thing is just to make sure I’m not the last.”
