For more than five decades, Delecta Al Johnson, better known as Lujon, has quietly built an extraordinary career that spans songwriting, production, engineering, performance, and artist development.
As the founder and president of Lujon Records, he has worked across generations of music, collaborating with legendary artists, mentoring emerging talent, and continuing to shape independent music culture with authenticity and passion.
From Chicago nightclubs in the 1970s to modern-day studio collaborations with rising and established artists, Lujon’s journey reflects a lifelong dedication to music and creative evolution.
A Foundation Built on Soul and Performance
Lujon’s musical journey began in Chicago during the 1970s as a member of the group Onyx. During this era, he recorded with The Chymes on tracks including “Wrong Crowd” and “You’ve Waited Long Enough,” while performing throughout the city’s thriving nightclub scene.
By the late 1970s, he joined the group Omarays, collaborating with the Charles Stepney Foundation and performing extensively in Chicago and Los Angeles. The group even auditioned for A&M Records during a highly competitive era for R&B groups, narrowly missing a deal to Atlantic Starr.
These early experiences helped shape Lujon’s understanding of musicianship, performance, and the realities of the music business.
Building a Legacy Through Collaboration
In the 1980s, Lujon expanded his role in the industry by managing Studio “D” Rehearsal Hall, where he worked alongside Nidra Sylvers of Dynasty and collaborated with influential figures including Leon Sylvers, Wardell Potts, William Shelby, and Fenderealla.
During this period, he scheduled rehearsals for acclaimed acts such as The Deele, Paul Jackson Jr., and Donald Tavie, while also producing and drum-programming projects with Leon Haywood and artists associated with Total Experience Records.
Lujon’s reputation as both a creative and technical force continued to grow as he developed a unique ability to bridge songwriting, production, and live performance.
Sesil and Lujon: Regional Hits and Timeless Chemistry

One of the defining chapters of Lujon’s career began in 1985 with the formation of Sesil and Lujon alongside singer Sesil Jenkins, a protégé of Marvin Gaye.
Together, the duo released several regional hits, including “I Don’t Wanna Go,” which held the number one position on WOWI in Norfolk, Virginia for nine consecutive weeks. Other notable releases included “Be Yourself,” “Love Has No Color,” “Strokin’,” “Send for Me,” and “I Do.”
The project also brought Lujon into collaboration with Grammy-nominated producer Michael Buckholtz, further strengthening his presence within the soul and R&B landscape.
Over the years, Lujon also toured and collaborated with a wide range of celebrated artists, including Kurtis Blow, Joyce Sims, Lilo Thomas, Chad, The Manhattans, Miki Howard, and Cavin Yarborough.
His performances in the Miller Sound Express shows alongside acts such as The S.O.S. Band and The System placed him before audiences of more than 25,000 attendees in Norfolk, Virginia.
Lujon Records and Independent Excellence
As president of Lujon Records since 1989, Lujon has continued to evolve with the music industry while remaining committed to artist development and creative independence.
The label has become a platform for songwriting, production, engineering, and mentoring across multiple genres. Through Lujon Records, he has collaborated with a wide range of independent artists while maintaining an artist-first approach rooted in authenticity and musical craftsmanship.
In 2008, Lujon further expanded his technical expertise by attending Soundmaster Recording and Engineering School in Alhambra, California. This experience strengthened his already extensive production and engineering skill set, helping him continue delivering high-quality music in an evolving digital landscape.
Since then, Lujon has worked on projects featuring notable artists including Sesil J, Nipsey Hussle, artists from All Money In Records, and most recently gold recording artist Sinclair.
A Career Defined by Creativity and Longevity
Beyond recording and performance, Lujon’s career has also included songwriting contributions with cultural significance. Alongside legendary producer and songwriter Frank Guida, known for writing “If You Wanna Be Happy for the Rest of Your Life,” Lujon helped rewrite Virginia’s state song for presentation to the State Senate and House of Representatives.
He also co-wrote, produced, and performed on the song “Angie,” accompanied by a music video, while continuing to perform with the group LA Remot Kuntrol.
Throughout every phase of his career, Lujon has remained committed to preserving the soul of music while embracing new creative opportunities.
