The bird behind the beat
Avian Invasion is the project of Bird One (B1RD): a fully realised sci-fi character, interstellar emissary, and one of the most distinctive live electronic acts working today. According to the origin story at the heart of the project, Bird One was once an ordinary human, aged, damaged, and losing hope, until he was rebuilt by a race of robotic birds from a distant galaxy and sent back to Earth with a single mission: to deliver a message of peace, love, unity, and the reminder that no one is alone.
Behind the exosuit and avian persona is a multi-decade music veteran who spent his early career as a singer-songwriter performing at geek conventions and sci-fi events. By 2016, facing creative stagnation and personal difficulty, he chose reinvention: not a rebrand, but a full reconstruction. Drawing on the things that had always defined him (birds, science fiction, technology, and emotionally charged music), Avian Invasion was born.
Inspired by the anonymity and storytelling of acts like Daft Punk, and the musical craft of Above & Beyond, the project takes those ideas further: weaving an active sci-fi narrative through every release, performance, and fan interaction, creating a mythology that lives both on and off the stage.
A sound built to be performed, not just played
Avian Invasion live performance
Musically, Avian Invasion resists easy categorisation. Rooted in progressive house and trance, the project draws equally from classic rock, ambient electronica, and organic house, shaped by a background in musical theatre, choral performance, and fifteen years of piano work. The result is music built around songs with emotional architecture, not just dancefloor utility.
Coming from choirs, musical theatre, and a music degree, the artist has always been drawn to well-crafted compositions over pure functional club music. That influence shapes everything: tracks like You Are Not Alone, Choose Your Weapon, and Pilot Light span techno, organic house, and trance, but are written with live performance in mind, not just DJ sets.
“Coming from choirs, musical theater, a music degree, and fifteen years of banging on pianos for a living, nothing speaks to me louder than a well-crafted song.”
Live configurations range from DJ-only sets to full stage productions featuring keytar performance and live vocals, delivered through a custom beak microphone integrated into the costume’s design. Lighting rigs built into the suit are controllable by venue LDs in real time, making every show a fully collaborative spectacle. Avian Invasion has performed across conventions, clubs, queer events, immersive desert festivals, and VR platforms, drawing crowds from hundreds to tens of thousands.
Character, creativity, and the freedom of the mask
The persona of Bird One is more than a visual concept. It functions as a creative and psychological mechanism, a way of separating the performer from the person and channelling an idealised version of what the music is trying to do. With a previous career released under his real name, the act of assuming a distinct character became a genuine creative unlock.
“B1RD is a distillation of everything I wish I could be. Confident, wise, and eternally optimistic. When I’m looking through the mask, I’m someone else. Someone better than myself.”
That freedom extends to the music itself. Because B1RD is framed as an explorer constantly updating his programming, the project is licensed to experiment, shifting sounds, incorporating new influences, and approaching each release as a lesson in a specific production technique or composition idea. It also means the artist never ages on stage, and the spotlight falls on the message rather than the man.
Community and mission
Avian Invasion has built one of the most deliberately inclusive communities in electronic music: a home for queer audiences, neurodivergent fans, furry and cosplay communities, and anyone who has felt overlooked by mainstream club culture. This is not incidental: the artist is queer, grew up navigating those margins in the 1990s, and brings that lived experience directly into the project’s ethos and live environment.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Bird One performed interactive livestreams three times a week, becoming a genuine lifeline for isolated fans during an exceptionally difficult period. The messages that came back from listeners saying the streams had saved their lives were transformative, crystallising the project’s core purpose and turning Avian Invasion from a performance act into something closer to a movement.
“It was the first time I realised that I wasn’t just making thumping noises and beeps, I was doing something important. Something that actually mattered, and I had to take it seriously.”
That relationship with fans continues to deepen across hundreds of live stages, online platforms, and VR environments. The core message of the project, distilled into three lines repeated at every show, remains the beating heart of everything Avian Invasion does:
“You are alive. You are beautiful. You are not alone.”
What’s next for Avian Invasion
With tours intensifying and the Avian Invasion community growing worldwide, the project is entering its most ambitious phase. New releases are in development, more elaborate costuming and stage production are in progress, including experimental work with LED technology and potentially holographic elements, and the live show continues to evolve with each appearance.
Avian Invasion is available for club nights, festival bookings, convention appearances, queer events, immersive experiences, and VR platform performances. The artist is actively seeking a booking agent for wider international touring, and is particularly open to events aligned with LGBTQ+ causes, renewable energy, and social equity.
