Two soulful house voices meet on a warm, groove-led collaboration built for late-night listening.
Wez Whynt has spent over two decades behind the decks on London’s soulful house scene, growing up on a diet of rare groove and reggae passed down from his dad and brother before finding his own voice through R&B and neo-soul. NutownSoul, born Tshepo Diseko in Soweto, South Africa, has been writing, singing and producing soulful, uplifting house music since the mid-2000s, drawing on what he describes as inspiration from life itself, nature and life lessons. The pair have joined forces on “Close To You”, a soulful house anthem built around NutownSoul’s vocals and Wez Whynt’s deep, emotive production, released via Wez’s own Steady Progression Recordings on 18 September 2026 as the label’s third single. It follows Wez Whynt’s 2021 breakthrough as a producer with “Love’s Taken Over” featuring Elle White on Quantize Recordings, and “Close To You” has already picked up coverage from BigHouseMaster and Essential House. Wez Whynt and NutownSoul now join MN2S Label Services for distribution.
How did you get into music? What is your musical background?
“My love for music started at home through my dad and my brother, who were both big lovers of rare groove and reggae,” says Wez Whynt. “Being surrounded by those sounds from an early age definitely shaped my musical journey. I’ve now been DJing for over 20 years, and although I have a love for many different styles of music, my first love has always been R&B and neo-soul. That soulful foundation naturally translated into my passion for deep and soulful house music, which has become a big part of who I am as a DJ and producer.”
Tell us about your first release and what was special about that one.
“My first official release was a remake of an old R&B track called ‘Love’s Taken Over,’” Wez Whynt recalls, “which came out on Quantize Recordings back in 2021. That release was particularly special because it represented the transition from being a DJ and music lover into putting my own productions out there professionally. Having my first release come out through an established label like Quantize Recordings made it an important milestone in my journey.”
Tell us about the latest project you worked on.
“‘Close To You’ came about through my admiration for South African vocalist NutownSoul,” Wez Whynt explains. “I’d been a fan of his work for some time and always loved the soul and character in his voice. When working on ‘Close To You,’ I could immediately hear how perfectly his vocals would fit the track. His vocal range and soulful delivery complemented the production exactly how I imagined, and the collaboration came together naturally. It brings together the South African and UK soulful-house influences that are a big part of the Steady Progression sound.”
The track is out now on Steady Progression Recordings (catalogue SP003), with keys from NutownSoul and Ziggy Funk, bass from Ziggy Funk, mixdown by Ziggy Funk, and mastering by Earthworks Recordings. It follows the label’s earlier release “Take Me”, also reviewed on BigHouseMaster.
Could you describe your musical style and creative vision?
“Deep and soulful,” says Wez Whynt. “Soul is always at the heart of what I do. Whether I’m DJing or producing, I want the music to have feeling, groove and emotion. My background in R&B and neo-soul plays a big part in that, and I try to bring those influences into my house productions while still pushing the sound forward.”
NutownSoul describes his own style as a fusion of soulful elements with uplifting house, drawing, in his words, “inspiration from life itself, nature and life lessons.”
What advice would you give to anyone thinking of entering the music industry?
“Work hard and graft,” says Wez Whynt. “There are always going to be ups and downs, especially in the music industry, so you have to stay focused and believe in what you’re doing. Most importantly, be true to yourself. Don’t feel like you have to follow every trend. Develop your own sound, put maximum effort into your craft and keep progressing. Things might not happen overnight, but consistency and hard work go a long way.”
What are your plans for the rest of the year and beyond?
“There’s definitely plenty happening,” says Wez Whynt. “I’m currently working on music and projects involving some incredible artists and producers, including MissFly, the legendary Frankie Feliciano, Masaki Morii, King Crowney, KG Sunset and Black Sonix, to name just a few. The aim is to continue building Steady Progression Recordings and establish the label as a home for quality deep and soulful house music from artists around the world. There’s a lot more music to come, so watch this space for Steady Progression Recordings.”
