We spoke to rising star rapper Paigey Cakey about her imminent set at London’s Wireless Festival.
Paigey Cakey takes to the stage at Finsbury Park’s Wireless Festival today (Friday 6th July). The rapper has spent the past year rapidly becoming one of the most buzzed-about artists on the scene. Today, she will perform at Wireless’ similarly-hyped all-female stage. Praised in the press as a way to combat the notoriously male-focused festival lineups of the norm, Wireless’ RINSE X Smirnoff — Equalising Music stage will shine a light on female talent from the industry, with Bad Gyal, Lady Leshurr and Barely Legal performing as well as Cakey.
To celebrate the performance, we spoke to Paigey about what it means to play Wireless Festival, and the importance of the Equalising Music stage.
“I feel like I’m part of something that will go down in history”
MN2S: Wireless Festival has been running for years, do you feel like Wireless is important to the UK music scene?
Paigey Cakey: “I feel like Wireless is very important to the UK scene. It gives up and coming artists and also established artists a big platform to showcase their talent. It’s also great for networking as there are many big American acts booked so I feel like it gives the UK scene a chance to connect with some big names backstage.”
How do you feel about being on the Wireless’ first all-female stage?
“I feel really happy and empowered to be one of the first acts to perform on the first all-female stage.
I feel like I’m part of something that will go down in history. I think it’s very important to shine light on females as we don’t get as much recognition as males in the industry and it’s a very male dominated scene.”
We have seen you rise to stardom as you continue to take control of the mic. How ready are you for Wireless?
“I’m so excited to perform at Wireless and shut down the stage. I know it’s going to be epic and an amazing experience.”
What can we expect from your performance?
“You can expect lots of energy, vibes and fun from my performance.”
As well as performing, Paigey Cakey will be taking over MTV’s Snapchat account for the duration of the day.
