The BARKING MAD label head teams up with South African vocalist Earl W. Green for a smooth, elegant slice of soulful house out October 31st on DJ Spen’s iconic imprint.
House music producer Peter Mac marks a milestone in his career with his highly anticipated debut on DJ Spen’s legendary label Quantize Recordings. The single, Distant Lovers, features the velvety vocals of South African singer Earl W. Green and showcases Peter’s signature soulful house sound.
The Story Behind “Distant Lovers”
“I’ve always been a big fan of DJ Spen’s music and dreamed of releasing on his label,” Peter explains. “When I started working with Earl on this track, I knew right away it would be a perfect fit for Quantize.”
The collaboration came together seamlessly. “I love Earl’s voice and always wanted to do a track with him,” Peter says. “I sent him a track I was working on, and he absolutely nailed it with his soulful vocals. His voice has such a natural connection to that classic American soulful sound.”
A Soulful House Journey
The sound of Distant Lovers is deeply rooted in soulful house traditions. “A lot of the releases on Quantize, Groove Culture, and other great Soulful House labels inspired this track that Frankie Knuckles vibe,” Peter shares. “It’s very soulful, with strong, emotive vocals.”
Peter draws on his experiences attending iconic house events in the late ’90s and early 2000s. “I was lucky enough to see Frankie Knuckles DJ a number of times it definitely influenced the way I approach soulful house with vocals.”
Working with Quantize and MN2S
The connection to Quantize came through MN2S Label Services, who introduced Peter to DJ Spen. “They were totally professional from the first email through to the release,” he says. “It’s been amazing to work with them.”
Peter’s style spans multiple house genres, including Deep House, Latin House, Afro House, and Soulful House. “For this track, it sits perfectly within Quantize’s soulful, gospel-infused legacy,” he notes.
Launching BARKING MAD Records
During the COVID-19 shutdown, Peter turned his focus to music production, which eventually led to the creation of his own label, BARKING MAD Records. “When the events business went to zero, I asked myself, ‘What am I going to do?’ I’ve always wanted to produce, and with my musical background, the transition came naturally. The technical side took a lot of YouTube hours!”
BARKING MAD releases a wide spectrum of house music, from Afro and Latin House to Deep and Soulful House. “I think our diversity really sets the label apart,” Peter says.
What’s Next for Peter Mac
Looking ahead, Peter has no shortage of plans. “I release a lot of music both on my own label and in collaborations. Hopefully, Spen and I will work together again soon. It’s something I’d love to do.”
He hopes listeners feel the vibe of Distant Lovers: “It’s all about sexy, soulful, elegant house music. Releasing on Quantize is a true bucket-list moment for me.”
