DJ Rena Wins DMC World Championship | News | MN2S

13 year old turntable sensation, DJ Rena, wins the DMC World Championship and the Kame World Classic DJ Competition in the space of just 5 months

Despite his age, DJ Rena has the confidence of a veteran disc jockey. During the final of the Kame World Classic DJ Competition, crowds jeered in awe as he showboated and taunted DJ Fummy and Graded. With his impressive ability to scratch two vinyls whilst spinning on the spot like a young Michael Jackson, DJ Rena put on a record-breaking performance. After flipping off fellow countryman DJ Fummy, the older and more experienced DJ dropped Eminem’s ‘Lose Yourself’, performing the rest of his set blind folded.

Ultimately however, not even this was not enough for Fummy to take the title. Resident judges Total Eclipse, Vekked and DJ Brace crowned DJ Rena as global champion, with DJ Fummy in second place, followed by Denmark’s very own Graded in third.

To win such a prestigious competition is huge for any DJ; rounds begin with 6 regional battles across Asia, Australia, Europe, New Zealand, North America and South America and the two very best DJs from each of these locations are invited to the grand final. Historically, the finale involves a three-way battle, with each disc jockey throwing 3 routines each.

As for Rena’s performance, his routines were flawless. His fingers flashed across the turntables, proving to the crowd gathered in Aukland’s Mercury Theatre that he will be destined for a colourful career.

Rena’s relationship with hip hop began at the age of three, when he took up dancing lessons. By the age of 8, he was entering hip hop dance-offs and tearing up the stage. It was in this environment where he was first exposed to live turntablism. From here he began attending DJ battles and thus his passion was born.
Since the purchase of his first deck, DJ Rena has been smashing boundaries. In such a cliquey and fickle industry, DJ Rena has exceeded all expectation, winning the Monster DJ Battle in 2016, Kamikaze Battle in 2016 and the New Trick DJ Battle in 2015. He has even been dubbed Japan’s 2018 turntablist of the year by Global Spin Awards.

For all dance and bass music fans, DJ Rena is an act worth acquainting with. His rise has been thrilling to witness and fans eagerly anticipate his next moves.
