The hybrid sound of Shiverwood Shade developed quite organically as the band members brought together their diverse musical influences. Everyone in the band grew up listening to different styles—ranging from the heavy grooves and aggression of nu-metal, the emotional and melodic side of alternative rock, and the intensity of post-hardcore, to the atmospheric textures of electronic genres like industrial, EDM, and synthwave.
While writing songs, the band didn’t want to stay confined to a single genre. The foundation usually starts with heavy guitar riffs, strong rhythms, and emotionally driven vocals. From there, electronic elements such as synth layers, ambient textures, and programmed beats are introduced to expand the mood and sonic depth of the track.
Over time, this experimentation evolved into a signature style where crushing guitars meet dark electronic atmospheres and cinematic soundscapes. The blend helps the band express a wider emotional range—balancing intensity, melody, and atmosphere—while giving their music a distinct identity that stands out in the modern rock and metal landscape.
The band formed in Kolkata in 2013. Looking back, how has your sound evolved since those early days?
Since forming in Gwalior in 2013 later reformed with new members in Kolkata from 2022 , our sound has evolved quite significantly. In the early days, Shiverwood Shade was driven mainly by raw energy and heavy guitar-focused arrangements, influenced strongly by nu-metal and alternative rock. The songwriting was more straightforward, built around aggressive riffs, powerful vocals, and the intensity that naturally comes from a young band finding its voice. As the years went by, we began experimenting more with our sound and production. We started incorporating post-hardcore dynamics, layered atmospheres, and electronic elements like industrial textures, synths, and ambient programming. This allowed our music to feel bigger and more cinematic while still retaining the heaviness at its core.
Our songwriting also matured over time. Instead of just focusing on intensity, we began paying more attention to emotion, storytelling, and atmosphere. That evolution is especially evident in our debut album Escaping Darkness, where heavy riffs, melodic passages, and electronic layers all come together to create a more immersive and dynamic sound. Looking back, the journey from 2013 to now has been about growing as musicians, exploring new influences, and refining a sound that truly represents who we are as a band today.
Early performances at events like Strings Fest and IIT Kharagpur’s Spring Fest helped build momentum. What do you remember most from that period?
Our early performances at events like Strings Fest and Spring Fest were a huge turning point for the band. That period was full of excitement, nerves, and the feeling that things were starting to move forward for us. What stands out the most is the energy of the crowd. Playing in front of large college festival audiences for the first time was both intimidating and thrilling. The response we received—people headbanging, cheering, and connecting with our music—gave us a lot of confidence and motivation to keep pushing our sound further.
Those shows also taught us a lot about performing on bigger stages. We learned how to handle stage pressure, engage with the audience, and deliver a tighter, more powerful live performance. Every gig during that phase felt like a learning experience and helped us grow not just as musicians but as a live act. Most importantly, that period built a strong sense of belief within the band. It made us realize that our music could resonate with people beyond our rehearsal room, and that feeling played a big role in pushing us toward creating and eventually releasing Escaping Darkness.
Your album Escaping Darkness mixes heavy guitars with cinematic atmosphere. What themes were you exploring while writing the record?
While writing Escaping Darkness, we were exploring themes that revolve around inner struggle, transformation, and resilience. The album reflects the emotional journey people go through when facing darkness—whether it’s personal battles, self-doubt, isolation, or the pressures of the world around them. Many of the songs were written from a very introspective place, focusing on the idea that darkness isn’t just something external, but something we often fight within ourselves. The lyrics and atmosphere try to capture moments of conflict, vulnerability, and reflection, while also pointing toward strength, growth, and eventual release.
Musically, the combination of heavy guitars and cinematic electronic elements helped bring those themes to life. The heavier sections represent the chaos and intensity of those struggles, while the atmospheric and melodic passages create space for emotion and storytelling. Ultimately, Escaping Darkness is about finding light through the shadows—acknowledging the difficult moments but pushing forward and emerging stronger on the other side.
Songs like “Crawling Back” and “Holding On” balance aggression with emotional depth. How do you approach writing music that is both heavy and expressive?
When we write songs like “Crawling Back” and “Holding On”, the goal is always to balance raw intensity with emotional honesty. For us, heaviness isn’t just about aggressive riffs or loud sections—it’s about capturing a feeling and translating that into sound.The process usually starts with an emotional or lyrical idea. Once the core theme of the song is clear, we begin building the music around it. Heavy guitar riffs, powerful drums, and intense vocals often represent the conflict or struggle within the story, while melodic passages, atmospheric synths, and dynamic transitions give space for vulnerability and reflection.
We also pay a lot of attention to dynamics. Instead of keeping everything heavy throughout, we like to contrast crushing sections with more melodic or ambient moments. That contrast allows the aggressive parts to hit harder while letting the emotional side of the song breathe. Ultimately, the aim is to make the music feel genuine and immersive—where the heaviness carries the energy and the melody carries the emotion. When those two elements come together naturally, the result is something that feels both powerful and deeply expressive.
Electronic textures play a big role in your sound. How do you integrate those elements without losing the raw energy of a rock band?
Electronic elements are an important part of our sound, but we always treat them as enhancements rather than replacements for the core band energy. The foundation of every Shiverwood Shade track still begins with live instruments—guitars, bass, drums, and vocals. That raw band performance is what carries the intensity.
When we add electronic textures like synths, industrial sounds, ambient layers, or programmed beats, we use them mainly to build atmosphere and depth around the main riffs. Instead of competing with the guitars, the electronic elements are arranged to sit in the background or fill the sonic space between sections.
Another key aspect is dynamics and balance. In heavier sections, the electronics often support the groove or add subtle textures so the guitars and drums remain the driving force. In more atmospheric parts, the synths and soundscapes can come forward to create a cinematic mood before the full band kicks back in.Ultimately, it’s about maintaining the raw energy of a live rock band while expanding the sonic landscape. The electronics help us create a darker, more immersive atmosphere, but the heart of the music is always the band playing together.
The album artwork and visuals for Escaping Darkness suggest themes of struggle and emergence. How important is visual storytelling to the band?
Visual storytelling is very important to us because it helps extend the emotional world of the music beyond just sound. With Escaping Darkness, the themes revolve around struggle, darkness, transformation, and eventually finding strength, so the artwork and visuals were designed to reflect that same journey.
For us, visuals—whether it’s album artwork, stage visuals, music videos, or promotional imagery—act as another layer of storytelling. They help listeners connect with the atmosphere of the music even before they press play. The darker aesthetic, contrasting light and shadow, and symbolic imagery all represent the idea of moving through chaos and emerging stronger on the other side.
We also see visuals as a way to create a complete artistic identity for the band. When the sound, lyrics, and visuals all align, it makes the experience more immersive for the audience. Ultimately, visual storytelling helps bring the concept of Escaping Darkness to life and allows listeners to feel the journey both musically and visually.
You’ve recently taken steps toward a more global presence through new label and distribution partnerships. What has that shift meant for the band?
Taking steps toward a more global presence through new label and distribution partnerships has been a significant milestone for Shiverwood Shade. For a long time, the band was operating independently, focusing on writing, performing, and building a local and regional audience. These new partnerships have helped us expand that reach beyond our immediate scene.
One of the biggest changes is greater accessibility for listeners worldwide. With stronger distribution, our music can reach audiences on more platforms and in more regions, making it easier for people across different countries to discover and connect with our sound. It has also brought a new level of professional support—from marketing and promotion to strategic release planning. That allows us to focus more on the creative side while still ensuring that the music is reaching the right listeners.
Most importantly, this shift has opened the door for international exposure and collaborations, giving us opportunities to connect with new audiences, festivals, and artists outside our local circuit. For the band, it feels like the beginning of a new chapter where the music can travel much further than before.

The goal is to evolve naturally—experimenting with new textures, production styles, and songwriting approaches without losing the raw intensity and emotional depth that defines our music.
Musically, we’re interested in exploring even more cinematic and atmospheric layers, expanding the electronic side of our sound while still keeping the heavy guitar-driven foundation. That could mean deeper experimentation with industrial elements, ambient sound design, and modern electronic influences, alongside the aggressive riffs and powerful rhythms we’re known for. We also want to focus on writing songs that feel bigger and more immersive, both in terms of storytelling and sound. The idea is to create music that not only hits hard but also takes listeners on a complete emotional journey.
At the same time, a big part of the future for us is bringing that evolved sound to larger audiences through live performances, new collaborations, and future releases. Escaping Darkness is just the beginning, and we see it as the first chapter in a much bigger creative journey for the band.
