Thinking booking a tennis player for your next event?
Sure, they’re talented at hitting a ball around a court, but these tennis players have a bit more to them than the average tennis player, because they’re on our talent roster and available for public speaking engagements and appearances.
Tennis players unlike many of our biggest sports stars don’t play in a team; if a tennis player wants to make it to the top of their game, the only person who can get them there is themselves; it’s part of their appeal as celebrity talent.
It also means that when they are having a bad day, there’s no-one else there to pick up the slack – they have to be on their top form 100% of the time.
More perhaps than any other sport, the one-on-one nature of playing tennis makes it a game that’s all about psychology – being in peak physical condition is only half of the battle, the world’s top tennis players also have to be psychologically resilient and able to keep their cool in the heat of the moment.
We’ve got lots of top tennis stars on our books, keep reading to find out a bit about them and what makes them such intriguing speakers for hire.
Andy Murray
The most famous Brit on our list, Andy Murray has been the golden child of tennis in the UK, washing away the disappointments of his predecessors by winning both Wimbledon and an Olympic gold medal, as well as several other grand slam titles.
A famously temperamental Scot, Murray is currently ranked #2 in the world and hails from the Scottish town of Dunblane, famous for one of the bloodiest episodes of gun violence in Britain. Though Murray attended the school at which the incident occurred and was there at the time, he was unhurt and avoids talking about it in interviews.
Playing tennis since the tender age of three, Murray has now been on the professional scene for over a decade, beginning as the #407 ranked player in the world and climbing 406 places to his current position!
Murray’s brother Jamie is also a professional tennis player though his speciality is doubles, and the two sometimes play together – notably, they won a silver medal in the 2012 Olympic Games doing so.
The trials that Andy has had, both professional and personal, along with his high profile and dry sense of humour make Murray an easy win as a celebrity speaker – there are few that won’t be impressed by one of our country’s greatest sporting heroes.
Roger Federer
Currently ranked as the world number #3, Roger Federer is often regarded as the greatest living tennis player, simply because his accomplishments are so numerous. He turned professional in 1998, and since 2002 has continuously been in the world top ten.
He has won 17 grand slam titles and reached the final of a grand slam on 27 occasions, including at least five times for each of the grand slam titles (Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and US Open.)
Born in Switzerland, Federer played many sports from a young age; football, tennis, badminton and basketball. He credits this wide range of experiences with the excellent hand-eye coordination which has bred success on the court for him.
His almost unparalleled skill means that Federer has encountered friendly rivalries with most of the other top tennis players of his generation, and is a household name the world over.
The skill he has and the fame that he enjoys along with a healthy dose of charisma make Federer a fascinating character and one who has plenty to offer as an after dinner speaker.
Serena Williams
Not just one of the top women in tennis but also one of the top women in sport and one of the most famous faces on the planet, Serena Williams has been the world number one for much of her career, which began in 1995. She first hit the top spot in the world rankings in 2002, and has done so six times since.
She has the most major singles, doubles, and mixed doubles titles combined among active players of either sex, and with sister Venus is unbeaten in grand slam doubles finals, making her something of an unstoppable force on the court.
She has come head to head with Venus in 27 matches over the course of her career, of which she has won 16, just edging it out over her sister.
Her absolute dedication to the sport and the unique problems which competing directly with a sibling creates means she’s a fascinating motivational speaker that any audience can appreciate.
