About

Brian Peter George Eno was born on May 15, 1948, in Melton, Suffolk, England. His early life was influenced by his father, a postal worker and clock repairer, and his Belgian mother. Eno’s grandfather, a multi-instrumentalist, also contributed to his musical exposure. He attended St Joseph’s College, Ipswich, a Catholic grammar school, where he developed an interest in American R&B, blues, and doo-wop. Inspired by Dutch painter Piet Mondrian, Eno pursued art and music, enrolling at Ipswich School of Art in 1964 and later Winchester School of Art, graduating in 1969. During this period, he experimented with tape recorders as musical instruments and participated in various avant-garde and college groups, including the Black Aces and The Merchant Taylor’s Simultaneous Cabinet.

Eno’s professional music career began in London in 1969, where he became involved with experimental groups like the Scratch Orchestra and the Portsmouth Sinfonia. His first commercially released recording was with the Scratch Orchestra in 1971 on “The Great Learning.” In 1971, he co-founded the glam rock band Roxy Music, playing synthesiser and contributing to their first two albums, “Roxy Music” (1972) and “For Your Pleasure” (1973). Known for his flamboyant stage presence, Eno departed from Roxy Music in 1973 due to creative differences. He swiftly launched a solo career, releasing his debut, rock-oriented solo album, “Here Come the Warm Jets,” in February 1974, which received critical acclaim. That same year, he released the single “Seven Deadly Finns,” his only UK Top 40 hit. His second solo album, “Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy),” followed in November 1974, featuring collaborations with artists like Phil Collins and Robert Wyatt.

A turning point in Eno’s career came in 1975 after a road accident left him recuperating. During this time, he conceived the idea of “ambient music,” leading to the influential albums “Discreet Music” (1975) and “Ambient 1: Music for Airports” (1978). This new genre aimed to create music that could be both ignorable and interesting, modifying the listener’s perception of their environment. Throughout the 1970s and beyond, Eno became a highly sought-after producer, working with an extensive list of artists including David Bowie (on his Berlin Trilogy), Talking Heads, U2, Coldplay, Laurie Anderson, and Grace Jones. He also expanded into visual art with sound installations and generative music systems, such as “77 Million Paintings” (2006). His diverse career has solidified his reputation as one of popular music’s most influential and innovative figures.
